Special Considerations

A bit wobbly

Doberman Pinschers grow very rapidly. This makes them prone to developing Wobblers Syndrome, also known as cervical vertebral instability. The vertebrae in the neck don’t form properly, causing lesions to appear along the spine.

DID YOU KNOW?

“Studies have shown that approximately five and one-half percent of the Doberman population suffers with Wobblers Syndrome. Symptoms include staggering, falling, difficulty turning the neck and head, and sometimes paralysis”.

It is believed Wobblers can be prevented, in part, by feeding Dobermans a diet encouraged to slow their growth rate.

A matter of the Heart

Dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM, is another well-recognized concern for Doberman Pinschers . This condition causes one or more of the heart chambers to widen, reducing the ability to pump blood efficiently.

Symptoms may include:

  • Congested lungs
  • Lethargy
  • Weight loss
  • Coughing

The Grain-Free Question

In 2018, concerns emerged relating to deaths from cardiomyopathy being linked to some grain-free dog foods. A joint task force between the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network and Veterinary Cardiologists was formed. Although many of these diets were pea and lentil-based products, research indicates that these foods, in and of themselves, are not problematic.

The case of the missing Supplement

However, what does seem to be a problem is low levels of dietary taurine (an amino acid) and high levels of protein, phosphorus and salt. It was widely believed that dogs do not require supplementation since their bodies are able to make it out of other nutrients. We now know that this is not always true.

“For years, taurine was only added to cat food! But some dogs are not able to synthesize taurine on their own and a deficiency can lead to DCM”.

Nutrition Guidelines for Dobermans

With these specific health concerns at the top of the list, the best dog food for Dobermans is going to have a specific nutrient profile. Some of the highest quality pet food manufacturers offer a formula already tailored to meet the needs of large breeds. However, not every brand is going to state that on the label.

What to look for in the best food for Dobermans

  • Food that has a calcium to phosphorus ratio of one to one. You can safely go as high as one to two. This ensures that bones don’t grow too quickly, allowing plenty of time for proper development in puppyhood. This same rule holds true for adults and senior dogs.

  • A recipe that contains mostly high quality, meat-based proteins. Animal meat is both rich in natural taurine and easily digested by dogs. Mussels, fish, beef, pork and lamb have the highest taurine concentrations.
  • Food that is processed with low heat or alternative methods of preserving is superior.
  • High heat cooking destroys taurine and other nutrients. Avoid added ingredients that have been processed before the food is made, referred to as “rendered ingredients.” Also to avoid: bone meal, animal by-product meal and poultry by-product meal.

Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio

The balanced calcium to phosphorus ratio mentioned in the above guidelines is critical for a number of body functions. However, a food label may not tell you if it is balanced or not.

So how do you know?

A simple equation for figuring out a balanced calcium to phosphorus ratio is:

  • Divide the total calcium content listed on the label by the phosphorus. Be sure the two ingredients are being measured the same way, it’s usually milligrams mg) or grams (g).
  • If the answer is between one and two, then the dog food has a balanced ratio of calcium to phosphorus.
  • If the answer is less than or more than those answers, then the formula is not balanced.

For example

A dog food label lists the calcium as 1.00 percent and phosphorus as .8 percent.  Then you would divide 1.00 by .8 for a total of 1.25. Since this number falls between one and two, the formula is balanced.

With these factors in mind, here are five of the best dog foods for Dobermans on the market!
